When we talk about tail lights, we mean the two lights at the back of your car. This is most important when a car actually brakes as your tail light will serve as a warning to the cars at the back that you are slowing down. Imagine how disastrous it will be when the car behind you, traveling at a high speed, would not see that you have stepped on the brakes!
You might also have noticed how your tail lights are covered with a glass protector. This does not only protect your lights from breakage but it also functions as an illuminator. This will make the light more reflective and visible to cars who are even far behind.
